Hydroponic Strawberry Farm

The development of a 2ha site within the Plains Production Zone near Clive in Hawke’s Bay as a hydroponic Strawberry Farm required a multi-disciplinary approach, utilizing our planning, engineering and surveying expertise.

Cheal Planners assisted in obtaining Land Use Consent from the Hastings District Council to construct and operate a 20,000m2 hydroponic strawberry farm (defined as an Intensive Rural Production Activity). Land Use Consent was required for total building coverage requirements and earthworks (530m3) on soil that was potentially contaminated. In order to obtain consent, this proposal required consultation with neighbours, and writing and lodging the application which was granted on a non-notified basis.

Regional Consents were also obtained from Hawke’s Bay Regional Council for the discharge of stormwater into the flood draining network, along with erecting structures within the waterbody. Finally, the existing Water Permit was varied to reflect the new usage of water, being for hydroponics, with a renewal application for this water take now underway prior to expiry.

Cheal Engineers assisted with civil engineering design (in particular stormwater runoff, detention and disposal during storm events due to increased hardstand areas). Cheal surveyors were able to assist with topographical and set out surveys to assist and inform the planning, engineering and construction phases.

The hydroponic strawberry farm has now been constructed and commenced production. Another successful Hawke’s Bay business up and running.
