International Conference on Smart Monitoring, Assessment and Rehabilitation of Civil Structures

The 5th International Conference on Smart Monitoring, Assessment and Rehabilitation of Civil Structures was held in Potsdam, Germany from 27th to 29th August 2019. Cheal Hamilton’s Structural Engineer Farhad Darani presented his paper at the session for Damage Control, Repair and Strengthening. The paper title was “Rocking concrete shear walls with self-centering friction dampers for seismic protection of building structures”. In this paper a new earthquake resistant system was introduced in which the earthquake input energy is dissipated in damage avoidance connections with self-centering capacity. In current design concepts, damages and residual deformations are allowed and expected after moderate to severe earthquakes as defined in the codes. Also, buildings are vulnerable to earthquake aftershocks. However, the new proposed system protects the buildings against earthquakes and aftershocks, the building remains fully occupational immediately after earthquakes as the system brings it back to its initial position.

Farhad managed to get some sightseeing in while there. When asked what he enjoyed the most he replied, “Potsdam is a historical city close to Berlin, with an amazing historical site full of castles and sculptures. We travelled from Berlin to Paris by train and enjoyed the beautiful green lands across Germany. The Paris underground with its old tunnels and stair wells that took us from the ground floor down and up, left and right several times from here to there and finally to the station. Beautiful streets, Louvre Museum, Eiffel tower, Champs-Élysées, French food and a French hat, that was my amazing Paris experience in just a few words.”

“we then travelled from Paris to Lausanne, a beautiful city in Switzerland beside the Geneva Lake. We rented a car for the day and drove through the Alps and enjoyed the scenery, mountains, rivers and small villages. They are really good at construction as it was not possible to get to those places without those long tunnels and bridges. “

“Rome, pure history from 2500 years ago, all in one place. Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, Vatican City, friendly people, pizza and pasta. We also visited Leonardo da Vinci Museum and learnt how creative this artist was in his time. And finally, Fiat 500 an iconic classic car in historical city of Rome. “

We are glad you got to have some well deserved down time and are looking forward to seeing more of your innovative ideas Farhad.
